I know that this post may be a little late to the game since Lightning for Outlook came out back last summer (Summer ’16) but I think it an important topic that could relieve many of the stresses I find people have with Salesforce for Outlook.
First, let me address the question I know you have, Lightning for Outlook DOES work with Salesforce Classic and of course, Lightning.
- Send SalesLoft Emails in Outlook - Windows/Mac. Using the Loft It feature in Outlook logs and tracks your emails in SalesLoft (and Salesforce). If you do not wish for the email to be tracked, you can use the normal Outlook Send button to send without syncing it to SalesLoft.
- Salesforce Lightning for Outlook 2016 for MAC - stuck on store when trying to download Hey, salesforce has it's plugin available also for MAC users (for couple of months now).
- Where: This change applies to Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic in Contact Manager, Group, Essentials, Professional, Enterprise, Performance, Unlimited, and Developer editions. When: Salesforce for Outlook will be retired in December 2020. Why: Along with the end of extended support for IE11, Salesforce for Outlook will no longer be able to sync contacts, events, or tasks.
- Salesforce today the general availability of Lightning for Outlook add-in to all Salesforce customers with the necessary licenses. This add-in is supported in Outlook 2013 for Windows, Outlook 2016 for Windows, Outlook 2016 for Mac or Outlook on the web with either Office 365, Exchange 2013 or Exchange 2016 mailboxes.
Mass upload historic emails to Salesforce#### Easy to setup and use## Quickly select and upload all of your old emails## PC & Mac Outlook integration, Exchange & Office 365 integration, Google Apps & Gmail integration, Lotus Notes integration + more Save Saved Remove.
I find that there are many benefits to point out with the Lightning for Outlook. The first being the fact that is it not an application that you have to download onto your desktop, which is a good thing as I have seen those downloads cause quite a bit of trouble. Lightning for Outlook is an add-in for Office 365.
Lightning for Outlook is an add-in for Office 365. Your IT team can set it up in such a way that users don’t even need to download or install it themselves, they can just see it appear, like magic! Another lovely feature is that it can work on both Mac and Windows, a serious downfall for the Salesforce for Outlook app is that it is only for Windows.
Lastly, is the design, oh such a lovely design upgrade. Lightning for Outlook, as expected looks like Lightning and has the grace of the UI of it.
Whereas Salesforce for Outlook has its own more outdated design:
If you haven’t figured my decision from above then I will note it shall be Lightning for Outlook. It looks lovely and it works smoothly like a mini-Salesforce at your Outlook fingertips.
P.S. for those of you who may have had issues with the lack of being able to attach to a record when composing like you could in Salesforce for Outlook, that has been resolved the Summer ’17 release.

One of the great features of Salesforce Classic is its ability to send emails using Outlook, Gmail and MacMail from inside a Salesforce record by just clicking on the email address field. One click and the user’s email editor opens up in a pop-up window. Once the email is sent, the popup window disappears. The Classic email composer is intuitive and productive.
Then came Lightning. It changed just about everything. Some for the better and some for the worse. One thing that Lightning changed was the way that email address fields work by default. With Lightning, a click on the email address field launches the new Lightning email message composer. Many people, especially Classic users, don’t want to use the new Email Message editor and they are frustrated. With the default Lightning setting, sending an email using Outlook, Gmail, Apple Mail or SUPERHUMAN requires the user to leave Salesforce and open a separate email composer window.
Lightning Users Can Send Email Using Outlook, Gmail or Apple Mail from inside a Lightning Record by Making a Simple Configuration Change
This new Lightning functionality really bugged the developers at Match My Email, because it resulted in a lot of unhappy customers who didn’t want to be forced to use the Salesforce Email Message object when clicking on an email address field. Users don’t see the value added of the new Email Message object especially if they hadn’t opted for Einstein, which is super expensive.
Finding a solution to this problem wasn’t easy. Our developers didn’t realize that Salesforce Help used the terms ‘email composer’, ‘email editor’ and ‘default email application’ interchangeably to describe the functionality. It is one of those things that is really hard to figure out if you don’t know what key words to search for on Salesforce help and in the community bulletin boards. Fortunately, early Monday morning while working on something else, one of our developers in New Zealand found a configuration button in Personal Settings under Email that solved the issue. To configure Salesforce to use your regular email client when clicking on an email address field follow the steps below:
